"So where are you, Jonathan?" Jessica chanted under her breath as she paced across the living room. He was supposed to have come by hours earlier, but so far there hadn't been any sign of him.

Jessica had forgiven him for standing her up on Saturday and for not calling her all weekend. But this time he'd gone too far. I can't believe I'm being stood up again! she fumed silently.

She pushed aside the front curtain and stared out the window. Mrs. Beckwith from next door drove by in her yellow Buick. Mr. Kilgartens, another neighbor, was walking his dog. There was no sign of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

Tears of frustration pooled in Jessica's eyes. I have to see Jonathan, her mind screamed. Her whole body yearned for him. If he wasn't going to come to her, she'd have to go looking for him.

But her parents were keeping a close watch on her. She could hear their voices in the kitchen at that very moment. There was no way she could sneak out of the house. Of course, goody-two-shoes Elizabeth managed to get permission to go to the library, Jessica thought with a flash of resentment.

Wait a minute, she thought excitedly. The library! They'll have to let me go too. Although her parents were much too strict and overly protective most of the time, they could always be counted on to be fair.

Jessica ran upstairs to her room and grabbed her backpack, which was empty. Putting on her sweetest, most innocent smile, she breezed into the kitchen. "I just remembered I need a book from the library for my homework," she announced.

Her parents turned to her with matching skeptical looks. "What book is it that you need?" her mother asked pointedly.

"It's the book we're doing in English," Jessica replied. "I left my copy in school and have to read it for tomorrows class. And write a report," she added.

"What book?" her mother asked again.

"Oh, you mean the title?" Jessica inhaled deeply and struggled to remember what they were actually reading in her English class. "I know—'The Fall of the House of Usher,' by Edgar Allan Poe."

Her father grinned. "You're in luck, Jessica. There's a short-story anthology in the bookcase in the den, and I'm almost positive 'The Fall of the House of Usher' is in it."

Jessica blinked, then regained her poise. "Oh, wait—that's not right. We're doing 'The Raven.' "

"Nice try, Jess," her mother quipped.

Furious, Jessica stomped upstairs to her room, slammed the door, and flopped down on her bed. A flood of tears seeped into her pillow as waves of anger, desperation, and longing crashed over her. My life is a shambles, she thought.
